Introduction of college: The College was established on 20th June 1960 with the objective to provide the facility of higher education to students from Sangli city & nearby villages. Then this was the second college covering major part of Sangli & Kolhapur districts.

The students belonging to backward classes, minority & economically backward classes were deprived from higher education.

Management of Latthe Education Society decided to provide facility of higher education to the weaker section students & College was started on 20th June 1960 with Arts, Science, & Commerce faculties on the name Sangli College, Sangli. Up to 1963 this college was affiliated to Poona University and after opening of Shivaji University, it is then affiliated to Shivaji University in the year 1963.

The college is spread in 2.5 acres of land. The construction work of main building was started in 1964 with donation from the Social Workers & donors. During that period without any financial assistance, it was very difficult to run Arts, Science & Commerce College. After completion of ten years, in the year 1970 the college was greatly in need of financial assistance to complete construction work of college building.

During this period Walchand Trust, Mumbai donated Rs. 2.5 lakh and with this donation the construction work of 1st floor of present college building was completed. To express gratitude towards Walchand family, the management of L. E. Society changed the name of college as Smt. Kasturbai Walchand College (Art & Science), Sangli.

During the same period in the year 1969, the commerce faculty of the college was shifted in the new college Sangli College of Commerce presently known as G.A. College of commerce, Sangli. During the periods the college has started departments up to degree level for Science faculty i.e. Botany, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Electronics, Microbiology.
