Introduction of University:
The Department of Biotechnology, University of Pune was established in 1994. Prior to this, the teaching programme of M.Sc. Biotechnology was initiated at the Department of Zoology in 1985 along with few other such centres in the country, with ample support from the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, New Delhi.

In course of time, the Department of Biotechnology, University of Pune became one of the best centres of learning in Biotechnology in the country.The Department attracts students from all over the country and abroad. In addition to the core faculty, faculty members from other related departments and scientists from various National Institutes namely, National Chemical Laboratory, National Centre for Cell Science, National Institute of Virology, Indian Institute of Science, Education & Research, National AIDS Research Institute and Agharkar Research Institute contribute to the teaching programme. This support has been an asset to maintain the quality of the M.Sc. teaching programme.
The Department faculty has also been contributing to high quality research in the front line areas of Biotechnology. Faculty members also collaborate with scientists from National institutes in India and abroad. The research component further strengthens the teaching programme. Due to this excellent quality teaching program, this Department has been able to generate excellent human resources in Biotechnology. Every year as many as 50 students complete their Ph.D. in Biotechnology (University of Pune). Since several years many of the ex-students of the Department are well placed in various premier Institutions as scientists, teachers & entrepreneurs in various parts of the country and abroad.
This Department is also entrusted with the coordination of a recently started fellowship programme of DBT called the DBT-JRF Programme. The entire programme including selection of JRFs (#250) through an all India Entrance examination called the Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET) and Fellowship disbursal etc. are handled by the Department with the help of administrative manpower support (#3) received from the DBT.
The Department of Biotechnology, University of Pune (University with potential for excellence) established in 1994 offers a two year M.Sc. Biotechnology Course fully supported by the Department of Biotechnology(DBT), Government of India. It also offers M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in Biotechnology and related areas. This department since its inception emphasizes on appointing and inculcating meritorious faculty in various specialised branches in Biotechnology. The faculty members have been excellent teachers and research Scientists, and most of them are fellows of National Academies. They are members of various National Committees, and task force of various National funding agencies. The members have excellent records of publication in journals with high impact factors and National and International patents. This Department is also involved in developing various national programmes in Biotechnology.
Due to the in-built strength of the Department and input from various Scientists of National Institutes and industries in and around Pune, this department attracts meritorious students for both M.Sc. and Ph.D. courses from India and Abroad. The students fare extremely well in various fellowship programmes in India including award of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Fellowship (SPMF) of CSIR, and also in various International fellowship program from abroad.
