.Biocon is a fully integrated healthcare company that delivers innovative biopharmaceutical solutions. From discovery to development and commercialisation, we have the defining science, cost-effective drug development capabilities and significant manufacturing capacity to move ideas to market.
Leveraging India’s globally competitive cost base and exceptional scientific people resource, we are advancing our in-house R&D programs, while also providing custom and clinical research services to international pharmaceutical and biotechnology majors through our subsidiary companies, Syngene and Clinigene. Biocon has rapidly developed a robust drug pipeline, led by monoclonal antibodies and several other molecules at exciting stages in the biopharmaceutical value chain. With the successful commercial launch of our first anti-cancer drug and several promising discovery partnerships in the clinic, we remain committed to scaling new heights in frontier science and achieving new milestones in affordable medicine.
Area of Research:Biocon's R&D efforts are directed towards biopharmaceutical drug development through 3 principal domains:
- Process Sciences
- Non-clinical Research
- Clinical Research
Process Sciences:
Biologicals
Our biological development group is very strong and has developed processes for multiple products, including Insulin, Streptokinase, GCSF and BIOMAb EGFR™. In this department, we develop cell lines, fermentation/purification/scale-up/ formulation processes and analytical methods to meet global regulatory standards.
Small Molecules: Fermentation - Leveraging our core fermentation expertise, we are continuously researching and developing a range of microbial-derived pharmaceutical products for disease areas spanning cardiovascular, diabetes, nephrology, inflammatory and oncology. The processes we develop are robust and scalable, from fermenter sizes, 1 ltr to 125,000 ltrs.
Chemistry: Small molecule pharmaceuticals play an important role in Biocon's R&D programs. We leverage our expertise in chemical synthesis to improve manufacturing productivity for existing products and introduce new generics into our pipeline. Under development are several generics for the anti-infective, oncology and immunosuppressive domains.
Non-clinical Research: Our scientists undertake toxicology and pharmacology studies to establish proof of concept and provide assurance of safety in molecules under investigation. We plan, develop and execute studies based on global regulatory requirements.
Clinical Research: We develop clinical protocols for several novel drugs in our pipeline. We conduct well-designed studies which include assessment of novel biomarkers to derive maximum information about the safety and efficacy of our molecules in clinical trials. We interact with clinical researchers and physicians in major clinical centers globally to use up-to-date clinical knowledge in designing and analyzing our clinical studies.

Cardiovascular Agents
Rosuvastatin:Rosuvastatin is an oral cholesterol-lowering agent. It is a competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme catalysing the early rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis, i.e. conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate used for the treatment of pure hypercholesterolemia and mixed hyperlipidaemia.
Atorvastatin: Atorvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering agent that acts by inhibiting the HMG CoA reductase, enzyme which plays an important role in the biosynthesis of cholesterol used in the treatment of Coronary heart diseases.
Pravastatin: Pravastatin is competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme catalysing the early rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis, i.e. conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate. Widely used in the treatment of arteriosclerosis.
Lovastatin:Lovastatin is a cholesterol lowering agent that decreases the LDL levels, total-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol and below average HDL-cholesterol. Used to prevent coronary heart disease, without symptomatic cardiovascular disease.
Fluvastatin:Fluvastatin is a water soluble cholesterol-lowering agent. It is competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme catalysing the early rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis, i.e. conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate .It also reduces low density lipoproteins and triglycerides while increasing high density lipoprotein levels in the blood. Used in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia.
SimvastatinSimvastatin is a hypolipidemic drug used to treat hypercholesterolemia. It is competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme catalysing the early rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis, i.e. conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate. Successfully used in the treatment of coronary heart diseases.
Anti-Obesity Agents:
Orlistat: Orlistat is a reversible inhibitor of lipases. It exerts its therapeutic activity in the lumen of the stomach and the small intestine. It is indicated for obesity management including weight loss and weight maintenance, when used in conjunction with a low-calorie diet.
Immunosuppressants:
strong>Mycophenolate Mofetil: Mycophenolate Mofetil (MMF) is a prodrug for the immunosuppressive agent mycophenolic acid (MPA). It is an inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH) inhibitor. Used in conjunction with cyclosporine and corticosteroids for the prevention of transplant rejection in patients undergoing organ transplantation.
Mycophenolic Acid Sodium: Mycophenolate Acid Sodium, a mycophenolic acid prodrug, is an inhibitor of T-lymphocyte proliferation. Mycophenolic acid reduces the incidence of acute rejection in renal transplantation. Mycophenolate Acid Sodium is enteric coated and has been suggested as a potential method to reduce the gastrointestinal adverse events seen with Mycophenolate Mofetil.
Tacrolimus: Tacrolimus is a macrolide antibiotic that suppresses both cellular and humoral mediated immune responses. It specifically binds T cell receptors, inhibits cytokine production and IgE sensitivity. Used to lower the body's natural immunity in patients who receive organ transplants. Also a topical immunomodulator indicated for use in moderate to severe eczema.
Sirolimus: Sirolimus reduces organ rejection in patients receiving kidney transplants. To be used in combination with cyclosporine and corticosteroids and has been shown to significantly reduce rejection rates when compared to control regimens.
strong>Temsirolimus:Temsirolimus is indicated for the treatment of advanced renal cell carcinoma. Temsirolimus is an inhibitor of mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin). Temsirolimus binds to an intracellular protein (FKBP-12), and the protein-drug complex inhibits the activity of mTOR that controls cell division. Temsirolimus injection in the form of vials with the concentration of 25 mg/mL is being developed at Biocon.
Pimecrolimus: Pimecrolimus is a new topical steroid-free medication with immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory properties. It is an ascomycin macrolactam derivative. Pimecrolimus cream is used for mild to moderate atopic dermatitis.
Everolimus:Everolimus is an immunosuppressive agent used to prevent the rejection of organ transplants. Used in various Organ transplantation process. Opthalmics
