The Inaugural address was given by the Indian IT Computer scientist, the architect of the PARAM series of Supercomputers, and the Chief Mentor of I2IT, Dr. Vijay P. Bhatkar. His topic of address was 'Nano, Bio, Info & Cogno Science – The future.' ABCS’11 was a 2-Day event, comprised of 5 different sessions Molecular Medicine, Stem cell Biology, 2 sessions of Applied Biotechnology, and Bioinformatics. Every session was a perfect mixture of the experienced talk of domain expert speakers and young minds of students giving oral and Poster presentations. Dr. Prasad said, “This 2 - Day conference was organised with a specific mission of reaching out to the students and hopefully we have achieved our mission”. Students were very enthusiastic and happy to be part of this conference. ”These two days conference gave me an innovative knowledge and made me realise the importance of biotech in my career. Dr. Burra gave me the best knowledge about my project work too”, said Yogesh I. Sonawane – A student.Day 1 ended with an educating Bio-Quiz and an entertaining cultural event which was enjoyed by every participant of the cultural event. Ms. Manvi Vernekar, A student said, “The cultural programme organised was very good, apart from the very well arranged conference". On the second Day BioMedLive got a recognition as the α version of BML was launched by the founder of BML and the HoD of School of Biotechnology I2IT, Dr. BVLS Prasad and its first video was live streamed online generating a huge response from the audience. Mr. Jagdish said, “I have been in Biotech industry for few years and I believe that, there is a huge gap between industry and academics, we have to take an initiative to reduce that gap and BML is that initiative we have to bring into action now”.Another event which caught attention of the public was the discussion that took place between the experts and the students at the end of the conference on,'The prospects of Biotechnology'. . The discussion panel had expert scientists like Prof. Ramanathan, Prof Sudhir Kumar, Dr. Mahadev Kalyankar and Dr. Rajeev Jain. During the discussion, topics like opportunities for freshers, syllabus of students, future prospects of biotechnology were raised.The first prize for poster competition was a tie between Aditya Banerjee, Student of MS in Stem Cell Biology of I2IT and Gosami Smital, Student of IPER. Aditya had presented a poster on the topic ‘In Vitro Analysis Of The Molecular Action Of Snake’s Antivenom On HeLa Cells’ and Gosami Smital presented on ‘Effect Of Quercitine On Ramipril And Spironolactone On Fructose Induced Hypertension In Rats’. The First prize for oral competition was also a tie between Ms. Aditi Kapor, a MS student of I2IT, who presented on the topic ‘Niche induces de-differentiation in cancer cells’ and Ms. Preetika Arya from DRDE who presented on the topic ‘Production of Anti-rTcsL Antibodies for the Detection of lethal toxin of Clostridium sordellii and its in-vitro Neutralization in HeLa Cells’. Ms. Meherunisa Raje from University of Pune won the second prize for the oral competitions. Her topic for presentation was ‘Genetic diversity among osteopenia and osteoporosis patients across four microsatellite markers near the VDR gene’. “It was a tough competitions among the students which made the job of the examiner more difficult” said, Dr. Mahadev Kalyankar, Scientist and academician.
Overall this conference was a grand success and students are eagerly waiting for the 4th annual biotech conference.
